Breaking News February 5, 2024: Taylor Swift Breaks Grammy Album of the Year Record and Announces New Album, ‘Argylle’ Bombs at Box Office

Taylor Swift took home two Grammys last night and broke the record for most Grammy Album of the Year wins. Swift is now the only artist in history to win the Album of the Year Grammy four times.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Taylor's win last night broke the tie for Album of the Year Grammy that she held with Stevie Wonder, Frank Sinatra, and Paul Simon — all three-time winners. During her Grammy acceptance speech, Swift said, “I would love to tell you this is the best moment of my life but I feel this happy when I finish a song or when I crack the code to a bridge that I love or when I'm shot-listing a music video, or when I'm rehearsing with my dancers or my band or getting ready to go to Tokyo to play a show. For me, the award is the work. All I want to do is keep being able to do this. I love it so much. It makes me so happy. It makes me unbelievably blown away that it makes some people happy who voted for this award, too. All I want to do is keep doing this, so thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to do what I love so much.”

After winning her 13th Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Album for Midnights, Taylor Swift made a surprise announcement about a new album. “I want to say thank you to the fans by telling you a secret that I've been keeping from you for the last two years, which is that my brand new album comes out April 19,” said Swift. “It's called The Tortured Poets Department. I'm gonna go post the cover backstage.”

Rapper Killer Mike Handcuffed and Arrested After Winning Three Grammys

Michael Santiago Render, better known as Killer Mike, walked away with three Grammys last night before the cops took him away in handcuffs.

Entertainment Weekly reports that after Killer Mike won three Grammys during the pretelevised portion of the ceremony, video surfaced on social media of police leading the rapper out of L.A.'s Crypto.com arena in handcuffs. 

The Hollywood Reporter‘s Chris Gardner, who first posted the videos on X, said that an official told him “it's a misdemeanor and has nothing to do with anything that happened today here inside the arena. Likely he will be released once it’s sorted. ‘It’s a big nothing,' source says.”

During the Grammy preshow, Killer Mike won all three Grammys for which he got nominated: Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance for “Scientists & Engineers,” the song featuring André 3000, Future, and Eryn Allen Kane, as well as Best Rap Album for Michael.

Jacob Elordi Under Police Investigation for Allegedly Assaulting a Radio Producer in Australia

Australian police are investigating Saltburn actor Jacob Elordi for allegedly assaulting a radio producer this weekend.

Variety reports, “As first reported by Australia’s Daily Telegraph, the Saltburn and Euphoria star was at a hotel in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs when he was approached by Joshua Fox, a producer for The Kyle & Jackie O Show on KIIS FM. According to Fox’s account of the situation on the show Monday morning, he asked Elordi if he could have some of his bathwater for Jackie O for her birthday — a reference to a viral scene in Saltburn. Elordi asked Fox to stop filming and delete the footage, and then the situation allegedly escalated.”

Fox said on The Kyle & Jackie O Show, “And then Jacob kind of just flips and he kind of pushes me against the wall and his hands are on my throat.”

New South Wales Police provided the following statement to Variety: “Officers attached to Eastern Beaches Police Area Command are investigating after a man was allegedly assaulted outside a hotel in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs. Police were told about 3:30 p.m. on Saturday 3 February 2024, a 32-year-old man was allegedly assaulted by a 26-year-old man. The man did not sustain any injuries. Inquiries into the incident is continuing.”

Elordi seems fed up about that notorious Saltburn bathtub scene, which has even been marketed as a scented candle bearing his name. Elordi was recently cast as the monster in Guillermo del Toro's Dr. Frankenstein.

‘Argylle’ Bombs at the Box Office

Despite winning the weekend box office, Matthew Vaughn's spy action-comedy Argylle starring Henry Cavill bombed at the box office. The Apple Original Film acquired for $200 million made an estimated $18 million at the domestic box office and $35 million worldwide.

According to Variety, Argylle would have to make approximately $500 million worldwide to break even. In addition, as Deadline reports, audiences gave Argylle a disappointing C+ Cinemascore. 

Just a few days ago, Wealth of Geeks reported that, according to Variety, Henry Cavill and Sam Rockwell have not yet signed up for potential Argylle sequels. “I guess we just want to see how it does,” said Rockwell. Cavill added that it “all depends on whether the audience likes what we’ve done. If Matthew comes calling, I’d certainly say yes.”

After Argylle‘s lackluster debut and sad Cinemascore, we're pretty confident that audiences don't like what they've done and that Vaughn won't call Cavill for a sequel.

Cara Delevingne To Make West End Debut in ‘Cabaret’ as Sally Bowles

English model-actress Cara Delevingne has signed on to make her West End stage debut as Sally Bowles in Cabaret. Delevingne will reportedly replace rapper Self Esteem, who makes her final performance as Sally on March 9.

Deadline reports that Delevingne said in a statement: “There are no words to explain the excitement I have to return home to make my stage debut in such an iconic role. I am so inspired by the brilliant actors who have played Sally in past productions around the world and in this one in the West End. I cannot wait to be a part of this brilliant cast and production.”

In addition to Delevingne and Luke Treadaway as the Emcee, Deadline reports that “the pair will join Michael Ahomka-Lindsay, who plays Cliff Bradshaw in the production, Beverley Klein (Fraulein Schneider), and Teddy Kempner (Herr Schultz).” Cabaret first debuted in London in 1968.

Delevingne is known for her film roles in Anna Karenina, Suicide Squad, and Paper Towns as well as TV roles on Only Murders in the Building, Carnival Row, and American Horror Story: Delicate.

Christopher Nolan Wins Visionary Award at the 51st Annual Saturn Awards

The Grammy Awards didn't have a lock on award ceremonies last night. The 51st Annual Saturn Awards celebrated the best achievements in genre entertainment according to the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror.

According to the official press release, “Christopher Nolan was presented with the Saturn’s Visionary Award by Oppenheimer costar Emily Blunt, who won Best Supporting Actress for her role in the film. The legendary pop icon William Shatner presented Seth MacFarlane with the prestigious Robert Forster Artists Award and Dave Filoni received his George Pal Memorial Award by Ming-Na Wen, who won last year’s Best TV Actress for her role in The Book of Boba Fett. Keanu Reeves was in attendance to receive the very first Lance Reddick Legacy Award, presented to him by Titus Welliver star of Bosch and Bosch: Legacy. Jodie Foster was presented with the Life Career Award by Issa López, writer and director of the fourth season of True Detective: Night Country.”

Mads Mikkelsen Says ‘Hannibal' Could Return

Mads Mikkelsen — who played Dr. Hannibal Lecter for three seasons on NBC's Hannibal — says a reboot could happen if the show finds a new home. Hannibal aired from 2013 to 2015 and also starred Hugh Dancy, Caroline Dhavernas, Hettienne Park, Laurence Fishburne, Scott Thompson, Aaron Abrams, and Gillian Anderson.

In an interview with Business Insider about the possibility of Hannibal‘s return, Mikkelsen said, “I really don’t want to go back to any of my characters, except maybe for Hannibal because he’s not over yet. It's no secret that all of us who were part of the cast and [creator] Bryan [Fuller], we all want to go back. It's got to happen eventually sooner than later because we're not getting any younger, right? But the story itself can jump, it can have that gap, which is fine. So it's all about finding a home for it, but that's nothing concrete out there now. Why that's the case? I don't know. We love the show and there seem to be a lot of other people liking it as well.”

Mikkelsen previously told IndieWire that if Hannibal were revived, the story would go right into The Silence of the Lambs. “That’s always been an issue because they didn’t have the rights for that book,” said Mikkelsen. “But that’s obviously the most famous part and we’d love to go in there. We’d obviously switch it around a little and do all kinds of crazy stuff with it. That story is so interesting and the characters in it are as interesting. We’d switch around the genders and maybe even put two characters into one. We would love to find someone to play Buffalo Bill. That’s going to be tough. We found a Hannibal, so it’s possible.”

Mikkelsen recently reunited with Hannibal showrunner Fuller for the movie Dust Bunny. The final episode of Hannibal ended with a literal cliffhanger, as Hannibal and Will Graham embrace after a knife fight and fall off a cliff together.

America Ferrera To Make Feature Directorial Debut With ‘I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter' for Amazon MGM Studios' Orion Pictures

Oscar-nominated Barbie actress America Ferrera will make her feature directorial debut with I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter for Amazon MGM Studios' Orion Pictures. Based on Erika Sánchez’s novel of the same name, the movie was previously set at Netflix.

According to Deadline, “The story follows Julia Reyes, a teen with a sharp tongue, a fierce wit and big dreams of becoming a famous writer, somewhere far, far away from Chicago and her traditional Mexican immigrant parents who just can’t understand her love for Whitman, Dickinson, and the Ramones. They wish she was more like Olga, Julia’s sister, now eternally perfect since her tragic death. As Julia seeks to break free of her oppressive home, she tries to uncover her sister’s truth, and in the process gains a deep understanding of the wounds her family carries.”

I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter reunites Ferrera and Sánchez who both executive produced the Netflix series Gentefied, which got canceled in 2022 after two seasons.

Carey Mulligan Is Not Wrong When Says Actors Are ‘100% Lying' When They Insist That Awards Don't Matter

Saltburn actress Carey Mulligan has called out actors who claim that awards don't matter and that it's just about the work. Mulligan just earned her third Best Actress Oscar nomination, this time for Maestro.

During an interview with The Times of London quoted by Variety, Mulligan said, “[The Oscar nomination] is just the coolest thing. Because it’s from your peers. It’s wicked.” She added that “[actors] are 100% lying” when they say awards don’t matter and only the work counts.

Mulligan's comment seems like she could be referring to Margot Robbie, who got snubbed for a Best Actress Oscar and then reportedly said, “There’s no way to feel sad when you know you’re this blessed. Everyone getting the nods that they’ve had is just incredible, and the Best Picture nod. We set out to do something that would shift culture, affect culture, just make some sort of impact. And it’s already done that and some, way more than we ever dreamed it would. And that is truly the biggest reward that could come out of all of this.”

Whether or not Mulligan thinks Robbie is lying through her perfect white teeth, the former still thinks Barbie director Greta Gerwig was robbed of a Best Director nomination. “I’m gutted for Greta because I don’t know what else you can do as a director to get nominated,” said Mulligan. “You make a critically acclaimed film that’s also an incredible global success, and yet you don’t get nominated?”

James Cameron Says That He Has Plans for ‘Avatar 6' and ‘7'

Avatar 3 still doesn't have a title yet, but director James Cameron says that he has plans for Avatar 6 and 7. 2009's Avatar and 2022's Avatar: The Way of Water are two of the highest-grossing movies of all time. 

Despite the fifth installment not arriving until next decade, Cameron talked to People at the Saturn Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday about the sixth and seventh chapters. “We're fully written through movie five, and I've got ideas for six and seven, although I'll probably be handing the baton on at that point,” said 69-year-old Cameron. “I mean, mortality catches up. But I mean, we're enjoying what we're doing. We're loving it. We get to work with great people.”

Cameron said that the success of the first two Avatar films proves that people are “innately empathetic.” He added, “They innately want a connection to each other. They innately want beauty. And so many science fiction films are dystopian. Ours is actually dystopian in its message to some extent, but it's about beauty, it's about connection, it's about positive values, and that seems to be working. So what does that tell us about us? And as human beings globally? Because the films are successful in all markets everywhere. And so I think that's empowering for us.”

Release dates this far out are likely to change but, as of right now, Avatar 3 will premiere on December 19, 2025. Avatar 4 won't arrive until December 21, 2029, followed by Avatar 5 on December 19, 2031.

Cameron won four trophies at the Saturn Awards, including one for best direction.

David Leitch Eyed To Direct ‘Jurassic World' Reboot for a July 2025 Release

Universal is reportedly eyeing David Leitch — the director of Atomic Blonde, Deadpool 2, Hobbs & Shaw, and Bullet Train — to direct its planned reboot of Jurassic World. The film already has a scheduled release date of July 2, 2025.

According to Deadline, the reboot represents a fresh take on the series, with neither Jurassic World stars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard nor Jurassic Park stars Sam Neill, Jeff Goldblum, and Laura Dern expected to return. All of those actors appeared on-screen together in the most recent film in the franchise, 2022's Jurassic World Dominion, which earned more than $1 billion worldwide. David Koepp, who wrote the first two Jurassic Park movies, will write the script for the reboot.

What isn't clear at this early stage is how Universal defines “reboot.” Will the movie exist in the same universe as the other movies and just involve different characters we haven't met before, or will it pretend like the other Jurassic Park and Jurassic World movies never happened for a complete reset? Until Koepp talks we won't know for sure, but since he wrote the first two Jurassic Park movies, chances are that he won't write a script that completely negates his two creations and even the other films in the long-running franchise.
